The Region of Durham, Planning and Economic Development Department, will be at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) on Aug. 23 and 24. Stop by the booth in the Better Living Centre, which will feature Farm Connections agriculture education activities for youth, and promote Durham Region's agriculture and agri-food industry. |

Greenwood Mushroom Farm set to expand
Great news for Greenwood Mushroom Farm as it recently received funding from Ontario's Rural Economic Development Program. With this support, the local food processor will be expanding its facility and creating 80 new jobs to increase sales, stay competitive and meet growing demand.

Durham Farm Fresh receives provincial funding 
Joe Dickson, MPP for Ajax-Pickering, stopped by the Ajax farmers' market on July 21 to announce new provincial funding for the Durham Farm Fresh Marketing Association. A grant of $109,000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, as well as investment from the Ontario Market Investment Fund, will support enhanced marketing materials for the promotion of local food in Durham Region. Durham Farm Fresh will be also be working with Durham College on new product development, market research, and food safety initiatives. |

New traceability program coming to Ontario
A new traceability program is set to strengthen Ontario's agriculture industry. Through the Traceability Foundations Initiative, the governments of Canada and Ontario will support projects led by the agri-food industry to share information, enhance industry competitiveness and improve the speed in which Ontario responds in the event of a food product recall. Learn how to keep coyotes away at predation workshops
Are you a sheep, cattle or goat producer? The Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency invites you to attend a series of workshops about predation.
On Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m, Anita O'Brien, OMAFRA Sheep and Goat Specialist, will discuss effective fencing options for coyote control and livestock guardian animals. On Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m., Brent Patterson, Trent University wolf and deer research scientist, will discuss the natural history of coyotes and research relevant to predation issues in southern Ontario. Jack Kyle, OMAFRA Grazier Specialist, will speak on sheep grazing, and a producer panel will discuss their views and experiences with predation. Both workshops take place at the Ops Community Center in Lindsay.

New agriculture program to be offered at Durham College
Durham College will offer a unique new program beginning in September 2012: Artisan agriculture. The two-year program will offer courses involving innovative niche processing of quality products, and students will work with local food producers to develop and test new products for the specialty market. Durham College hopes to enrol 10,000 students by 2015 from across the Greater Toronto Area and the province. |

Upcoming food safety workshops hosted by the Region of Durham
On Aug. 24 at 7 p.m., you are invited to a 3-2-1 assessment for on-farm food safety workshop. You will have access to a computer to complete an assessment, and be eligible for future on-farm assessments, training and demonstrations.
On Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., you are invited to attend a food safety workshop, covering
